Building Blocks of Creative Writing
A course aimed at helping you produce story-based prose or scripts.
The course covers the building blocks of creative writing over 7 modules, where you will be given practical guidance on; where to find ideas and how to develop them into complete stories; writing openings that make people want to read on; building believable characters with distinct identities; writing realistic dialogue and telling back story; using conflict as a means to move stories forward, and; creating convincing settings that bring places and times to life.
Each module consists of background reading, practical exercises and assessed homework to help you develop your abilities in each topic, and to apply these to your story ideas, so that you can see your writing coming to life.
Analysing other writing provides an understanding of how good, and bad, writing works, that you can then think about in relation to your own work. To encourage you to do this, the course also includes homework and exercises where you’ll look at other writing – books, films or TV programmes – and think about what you read or see, how they are structured and how they work (if they work).
The course can be taken online, as personal tuition, on a group basis, or as any combination of these. You will receive written feedback on all homework, and can work at your own pace, so that you don’t have to rush exercises or homework.
The seven modules for the course are set out below;
Module 1 – Ideas and stories
Module 2 – Beginnings and beyond.
Module 3 – Characters.
Module 4 – Dialogue
Module 5 – Conflict and Action
Module 6 – Setting
Module 7 – Plots, sub-plots and stories
